IIHR Scientist

Year:

The Centre of Excellence for Cut Flowers, Thally, had the honour of hosting a senior scientist from the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru. The visit was focused on reviewing the ongoing flower cultivation activities, varietal performance, and the implementation of scientific practices at the centre.
The IIHR expert examined key flower crops being cultivated at the centre, including rose, gerbera, orchid, carnation, and anthurium, under both open and protected conditions. He appreciated the efforts taken in maintaining crop hygiene, varietal selection, and training initiatives for farmers.
During the visit, the scientist provided valuable technical suggestions for:
• Introduction of improved IIHR-recommended varieties suited for local climatic conditions.
• Adoption of integrated nutrient and pest management practices to reduce chemical dependence.
• Strengthening fertigation systems with water-soluble nutrients tailored to flower crop stages.
• Implementing soil health monitoring and periodic media testing in polyhouse cultivation.
• Enhancing training modules by incorporating latest IIHR research outputs and demonstration trials.
The expert also highlighted the importance of linking with IIHR for collaborative trials, training support, and access to breeder seeds and planting material.
This visit has opened new avenues for technical collaboration and knowledge sharing between IIHR and the Centre of Excellence, aimed at improving productivity, flower quality, and income for farmers in the region.
